Sri Lanka Parliament dissolved, General Election on April 25

The Presidential Secretariat has issued the Extraordinary Gazette notification to dissolve Parliament from midnight today, March 02 in accordance with the powers vested on the President by the Constitution.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, by virtue of the powers vested in him by Article 70 of the Constitution Sub-paragraph (c) of Paragraph (2) of Article 33 of the Constitution of the and in pursuance of the Provisions of Section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, has proclaimed that the 8th parliament of Sri Lanka is dissolved, with effect from midnight today, March 02, 2020.
The new parliament is summoned to meet on 14 May 2020.
The Elections to elect new members to parliament will be held on 25 April 2020. Nominations of candidates will be received by the Returning Officers during the period beginning on the 12th March, and ending at 12 Noon of the 19th March.

Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader-led political alliance, ‘Samagi Jana Balwegaya’ to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections was officially formed today in Colombo. The inauguration ceremony of the Samagi Jana Balwegaya was held this morning at the Nelum Pokuna Theater under the patronage of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who also leads the alliance.

Sri Lanka postpones general election

Thu, Mar 19, 2020, 07:39 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Mar 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Election Chief Mahinda Deshapriya has announced that the general election cannot be held as scheduled for the next month after the political parties handed over the nominations today.
Addressing a media briefing today, Chairman of the Elections National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the Commission has decided that the parliamentary elections scheduled for 25th April cannot be held due to the prevailing situation in the country.
The Election Chief said the date of the election will be decided after 26th March.

Sri Lanka to hold parliamentary elections on June 20

Apr 20, Colombo: Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya says that the parliamentary elections postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic will be held on June 20. The decision to hold the elections in June had been reached during a special meeting held today at the Election Commission premises between the Election Chief Mahinda Deshapriya and members of the Election Commission and the responsible parties.
