This Jaffna sea-fort is perfect for when you’re craving a prison break
Fort Hammenhiel, a 16th-Century Dutch Fort run by the Sri Lankan army, is now a restaurant and guesthouse/hotel of sorts on a slightly bizarre but beautiful island off Jaffna's coast.
How to get there:
Drive or take a local bus to Karainagar, which will take about 45 minutes from Jaffna town. The drive itself is through achingly bare and beautiful countryside, so it’s worth the journey.
When to visit:
Throughout the year, but call in advance to check if they are open for meals or whether rooms are available.
Tickets/Entry:
You’re welcome to visit for a meal and a paid tour of the island (usually about 5 Euro - Rs. 1.000 - a head for the boat ride), but if you’d like to stay, rooms start at about 55 Euro - Rs. 10.800 - a night.
